The Fold

I detest the state of the modern internet. It's hard to use, intentionally made more difficult in the name of ever-increasing profit. "Enshittification" has become the term of choice to be ascribed to this by the internet. Truth be told, I dream of a future where the net breaks free of its corporate shackles. A proper, user-run free-net. Is such a thing even possible, at scale? Maybe. Maybe not. Is this a satisfying answer? It would seem to me that it isn't. I think such a thing would need to be somehow node-based, lest servers become an issue. Inevitably, such a theoretical service would need to rent out servers otherwise, and there we run into the affliction the current net suffers from - corporate dependence. But if the users could host this themselves, then it could stand a chance. As we move deeper into what I've dubbed the "Disinformation age", it seems that the old guard no longer attempt to hide their corruption. The world is increasingly made to serve the wealthy man, and dammed if they'll let you have a crumb to their cake. They hate you. They hate your fucking guts. They need you, but they care not for you. The dollar has become the man, and the man thus the dollar. The net, like all good art, has come to reflect this. A change is needed. The people are screaming for it, and my throat is hoarse. I envision it less like a World-Wide-Web; and more-so as a World-Wide-Wave. A rapidly changing netscape, the rogue-like of web browsing if you will. Again I find myself asking, is such a thing possible? I find myself still lacking a real answer. But I can dream. Moreover, I can partake. This is a call to arms; a rally cry to all. Corny as it is, it is also true that we can change things if we so wish. There are others out there who are thinking all of this too; all it will take is for the metaphorical fuse to be lit.
